MARVELS OF MEMBERSHIP!

This club is revving up for a fantastic 2022! Did you know that we are working on a February on-the-water event? See the Vice Commodore’s column for information on all the fun!

I thought this month I would remind members old and new, of the great benefits of membership in WSA-OC. Our members regularly tell us how much they are inspired by the knowledge of other members and the encouragement they receive to learn more about sailing and get involved to the level they aspire to!   If you haven’t attended our monthly General Meeting in person, now is the time to start! We are bringing back the alternating meeting locations, starting in February meeting to be held in Newport Beach. There will be exciting topics and presenters – the February meeting is our formal installation of your new board. Please join us to celebrate!

When you come to meetings and meet new friends, you may also be surprised to know that some of members have found a boat partner through these connections!   Having a boat partner has many benefits if you are a first time owner - obviously both parties can share in the cost and more so, have a built-in boat buddy to experience the enjoyment of boat ownership.

If boat ownership isn’t your goal, you can still get on the water! This is a top benefit of your membership for maximizing fun – our on-the-water events! For a reasonable participation fee, you get on a boat and often you get fed! Boat owners benefit by getting their boats out of the slip with new crew and new opportunities for lifelong friendships! Boating is a TEAM sport! If you on a boat, be sure to connect with our Vice Commodore on events you would like to participate in!

I always like to remind our members that you have reciprocal rights to visit yacht clubs almost everywhere! Your membership gets you into a club where you can meet more new friends, enjoy libations and often great and reasonably priced dinners.   As a comparison, yacht club regular memberships often require a member sponsor, a substantial club initiation fee and monthly dues – your annual membership in WSA-OC is your pass to enjoy clubs without this investment. I do hope you take full advantage of these and other member benefits!

Ahoy Friends!

I think it’s safe to say that all of us have a love of the ocean; whether we are happiest sailing or power boating or kayaking or SUP’ing, sitting on a beach or swimming -- it is something that draws us and nourishes our souls. That said, I know how important it is for our club to offer you, our members, as many opportunities as possible to be together in our happy place.

As Vice Commodore it is my responsibility to design and implement these opportunities for your pleasure. I am so excited to share with you our first few proposed “On-the-Water” events:

As your new Commodore, Shelley Furse, indicated in our first meeting, we have shifted to the second Wednesday of the month for our general membership meetings this year.  This is due to the yacht clubs where our meetings are held being closed on Tuesdays.  We also want to get back to alternating meetings between Dana Point and Newport Beach.

What will stay the same is the meeting format and time schedule. Meetings begin at 6:30 with our Happy Half Hour and formal meeting beginning at 7 pm.  A short break around 7:45 – 8 pm with a main speaker at 8 pm. 

When in Newport Beach at the Newport Beach Yacht Club (AKA South Shore Yacht Club), it is highly encouraged to come early for dinner in the dining room.  There is a no host bar in the meeting room as before. 

When at Aventura in Dana Point, we will have some food selections available for purchase. It is our intention to provide something for those coming directly from work to the meeting.

I’m excited to be a new member of your board and serve as the director of Philanthropy. I bring a passionate blend for being on the water and service to women to my role. I started sailing in 1993 when my 6 year old daughter joined the children’s only Balboa Island Yacht Club and inspired her mother. Starting off in her little Sabot and advancing to Lido 14’s, Shields and onto bigger sailboats. I took a bit of a break from sailing and am happy to be back!!! My husband and I recently purchased a sweet little Duffy with fellow WSA-OC partners. We have a temporary slip in Dana Point and will move back to Newport in April. “Watts of Fun” will be part of many WSA-OC events.

My passion for women and philanthropy come from a 40+ year career in women’s health care. I am the Perinatal Education Manager at Kaiser Permanente Orange County (Anaheim & Irvine Medical Centers). I manage Perinatal Education & Bereavement and am the co-lead for Breastfeeding and the Family Violence Prevention Program.

I believe in the empowerment of women that comes from knowledge, support and being on the water. I believe that when we have been blessed we have a responsibility to be a blessing to others. As WSA-OC members who are blessed with opportunity and community, we are in a unique position to share. In addition, service to others is a key to combating anxiety and depression.

My hope for this year is to continue the great work of our philanthropy predecessors.
